Minutes – Tuesday, April 13, 2010
Jenevra requested that the PTO fund 2 (two) 25 years of service clocks for faculty. Jayson Tanzman will look into recognition items.
Discussed merging of Parent Enrichment Committee and PTO, being that they have similar mission statements and goals. Unanimously voted to proceed with this.
Main topic discussed with representative class parents was trying to lesson the burden of school fundraising. At this time the PTO and the individual classes run fundraisers throughout the year to cover the costs of field trips and a number of school functions. It is our hope that in conjunction with the class parents, the PTO would be able to raise approximately 17,000 a year between the craft fair – a fall fundraiser, and a spring fundraiser we will be able to meet these monetary obligations. As class parents they would would under the PTO umbrella and need to actively participate in meeting these goals. We will need job descriptions for the individual class parents. It will be strongly recommended that at least one class parent attend the PTO meetings.
We need to address the issue of having no PTO board for the coming year. The only officer in first term is Jayson Tanzman.
Jenevra spoke of Joe Corbi’s, who we will be using for our fall fundraiser that will run Sept 20-October 1, 2010
Julia Russell presented the PTO treasurers report with class balances. All the class monies in the accounts at the end of the year will continue to follow the classes until the monies are depleted.
There were three requests for monies from the PTO – Taconic High School was looking for a donation for after-prom that was voted down.
The parent enrichment committee was looking for funding for a guest speaker, but the amount was not know so it will have to be readdressed next meeting.
There is also a request for money for the community garden, amount not known, that too was adjourned to the next meeting.
Staff Appreciation week will be May 3-7, 2010. Julia Russell will coordinate.
Meeting adjourned at 7:10pm, next meeting May 11, 2010 at 5:45pm.

Flower Power Fundraiser
We are once again having a flower bulb fundraiser. Two years ago when we had it, we were able to raise over $800 for Richmond PTO funds. We will be using Dutch Gardens again. The prices on the fundraiser are comparable in almost all cases to what they charge in their regular catalog. The nice thing is that they have changed it so that for a flat $5 fee per order you can have the items shipped directly to your home. This is cheaper than if you ordered them yourself. Most of their plants are shipped with roots only. A Letter from Shakespeare & Co regarding CAP performance, Tuesday April 13, 2 pm
April 5, 2010
Dear Parents, Guardians and Friends,
Shakespeare & Company’s schools team (Kelly Galvin, Dana Harrison, and Josh McCabe) is part of nine-session collaboration with the 7th Grade at Richmond Consolidated School. We are working with students as they explore some scenes and text from William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. Our residency will culminate with a performance of the students’ scenes on Tuesday, April 13th at 2:00pm.
The second week of April will be busy for the students involved in the Shakespeare Residency. It is very important that each student know his/her lines and group text by heart. Any help you can give your child between now and the production would be greatly appreciated.
As has happened in past performances, multiple students portray one character in the course of the production. To help the audience keep the characters straight, the students will be wearing (and sharing) identifying costume pieces provided by Shakespeare & Company. Under this, each child will wear a base costume of clothing from home. This year’s base costume is neutral colors. Shirts and pants in white, khaki, cream, eggshell, taupe, beige, ivory, and off-white with no letters, logos, stripes or designs are preferred (if your child has a light shirt with writing on it, simply turn it inside out). There is no need to buy anything new for the base costume! If you do not already own items of that description, approximate it as best you can and do not worry. Footwear for the base costume should be sturdy in order to permit running, jumping, and offer good protection for each actor’s feet. (Open-toed sandals and high heels do not fit these criteria.) Please send your child’s base costume to school on Monday, April 12.
We look forward to helping the students share their hard work and exploration of these scenes from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar with you and the entire school community. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us by phone at 637-1199 ext 171.
Sincerely,
Kelly Galvin Dana Harrison Josh McCabe

Also, offered those days will be some information on what our school has been doing and continues to do around bullying. On Thursday, from 3:30 – 4:00 pm and 7:00-7:30 PM, there will be a video on bullying in the computer lab for parents of grades 5-8 and for parents of K-4 in room 105. From 4-7 PM, Mr. Bondini will welcome parents in the conference room to discuss our programs and answer any questions you may have about bullying.
On Friday, April 9th, there will be a video shown from 8:30-9 AM and 12:30-1:00 for the 5-8 grade parents in the computer lab. For parents in K-4, a video will be shown in room 105. CAP Performance
Parents and community members are invited to the grade 7 and Shakespeare & Company’s CAP performance of “Julius Caesar” on Tuesday, April 13 at 2:00 PM on in cafeteria.
They will give you instructions when they send you the plants but typically you soak the roots before you are ready to plant and it is just as easy to plant your flowers. They have a nice variety of flowers available.
Booklets will be going home with children in PreK through 5th grade on Thursday April 1st. Unluckily, I counted the number of families wrong and didn’t order enough booklets. They should arrive in the next day or so and will send them home ASAP. I do have five booklets held in case someone would like to order in the meantime.
We will need all orders sent back to school by April 13th. If you have any questions, please contact Wendy Laurin at konowitch@rnetworx.com
Go Green Night Success!
Many thanks to all that attended our second Go Green Night. We had a lot of fun with the sing-along with Mr. Kennedy and Dorothy Rickus, planting seeds with Mr. Bell-Devaney and Mrs. Kokoefer, designing and coloring our new school garden with Mrs. Hajjar, sharing recycled books with Mrs. Slavinski, the CAP performances for grades K-2 with Mrs. Brentano and Mrs. Mullen, paper making with Mrs. Harrington, Mrs. Beth Smith and Tammy Jervas. Many thanks to our guest speakers Rich Lassor, Mrs. Brentano, and Bridghe McCracken. A huge thank you to Mr. O’Gara for being MC that night and making sure all went smoothly. We’d also like to thank all the families and staff who donated items to the Silent Auction: Jim Biancolo, Dave Pugh, John and Julie Vittori, Adam Weinberg, Sandra and Albert Wojtkowski, Andy and Pam Wojtkowski, Michele and Richard Wojtkowski, Eileen and Paul Masiero, the Caligari family, Ron Kujawski, Tammy Jervas, Rich Lassor, and Polly Mann.

Grades 5-8
Mrs. Strock met with grades 5-8 on Wednesday morning to talk about several issues.
People have reported items being taken from lockers. Students were reminded they can bring locks from home for their lockers. They just need to give the extra key or combination to their homeroom teacher. People caught stealing will have consequences.
Mrs. Strock also talked about various forms of bullying such as name calling or exclusion. Students are reminded that if they are caught bullying, we will follow the rubrics already discussed and posted in the hallways.
Finally, Mrs. Strock discussed cell phones. Phones are allowed in school if they are turned off and left in backpacks or lockers. Students are at no time allowed to use a cell phone in school or at school functions, unless given permission – such as a school dance when they ask to call home for a ride. If a student needs to contact a parent they may use the school phone. Parents should contact students using the school phone, too. Pictures taken with cell phones are not allowed. If a phone is seen, it will be taken to the office, put in the safe, and returned at the end of the day. Ipods are only allowed by teacher permission in class, and not allowed during school teaching hours. They may be used on the bus. If you have any questions about these issues, please call Mrs. Strock. Thank you.

Minutes – 1/12/2010
Richmond School Committee
Minutes from the 1/12/2010 Meeting
Members Present: Chairman Lauren Broussal
Christine Triantos
Dewey Wyatt
Others Present: Superintendent/Special Education Director William Ballen
Principal Jenevra Strock
Richmond staff members Renfrew and M. Smith
Mountain Road School Director Adams
The Meeting was called to order @ 7:08 P.M.
- Citizens’ Concerns. There were no citizens’ concerns this month.
- Review and Approval of minutes from the 12/08/09 Meeting. On a motion by Christine Triantos, seconded by Dewey Wyatt, the minutes were unanimously approved as amended.
- Correspondence. Bill reviewed a letter from the Richmond Education Association indicating which articles they wished to review during up-coming contract negotiations.
- Superintendent’s Report. Bill discussed the following items with the Committee: contract negotiations with the REA will begin within the next few weeks, with Bill, Lauren and Roger Manzolini representing the Committee and the Town. A new proposal on a financial software upgrade with the Town has been received which is several thousand dollars less than the previous proposal. Bill and Administrative Assistant Rancourt will be reviewing the plan with Town Administrator Kerwood. The first meeting of the Principal’s Search Committee is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 P.M. Bill indicated that so far he has received app. 15 applications and expects several more before the 1/29/2010 deadline. There was a discussion concerning the Committee’s participation in the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s application for Federal Race to the Top funds. Sharon Renfrew, representing the Richmond Education Association, elaborated on the Association’s concerns. When asked by Chairman Broussal if the REA would support the RTTT initiative, Sharon stated that she didn’t feel that she could act on behalf of the Association without discussing this program with the members. Given such a short notice, one day, she said she would try to convene the group the next day. Sharon also stated that she was concerned that no RTTT funds would be available to Richmond School because the awarding criteria did not target our population. She understands the School Committee’s position that this would most likely benefit many other schools in the state and indicated her support for this position. Bill expressed his concerns as well, which were similar to those of the REA. After debate and further discussion, on a motion by Christine Triantos, seconded by Chairman Broussal, the Committee voted 2-1 to approve the Memorandum of Understanding supporting the Department’s application for funding. The Committee asked the Association to sign the Memorandum as well.
- Special Education Department Report. Bill reported that our residential student is doing very well, with great satisfaction her parents. He continues to try and resolve a transportation issue with another secondary student who is attending a program in the Southern Berkshire Regional School District and hopes to have this resolved by February vacation.
- Financial Report. Bill reported that an analysis of the FY’10 budget shows that we are within $10,000.00 of projections. A preliminary review of the FY’11 budget will take place at the February meeting.
- Principal’s Report. Jenevra reported that the school’s web site is up and ready to go, and computer hardware upgrading is proceeding. She presented a list of class field trips for this school year with their costs, and indicated that the PTO is now sponsoring fundraisers with room mothers now working as a part of this process with the PTO. In response to a question from Dewey Wyatt concerning many field trips being scheduled in the Spring, Jenevra responded by saying the weather is a concern in the winter months and many grades are completing curriculum units at that time of the year. The Middle School (5-8 Grade) Team is visiting Westfield Middle School and the Middle School in Lenox as a follow-up to the Professional Development Day held this Fall at MCLA, which centered on the My Voice Survey results. Areas of focus will include team activities, curriculum delivery, use of technology, performance based assessment and strategies to address the whole child. The Active Parenting Class starts next week, and rehearsals for this Spring’s play have begun. Jenevra also outlined several other school activities that will take place this month. Finally, she reported that last month’s Enrichment Week Program was a huge success. An exit poll will be conducted next week and she will share these results with the Committee next month.
- Other Items. Christine Triantos raised the issue of whether or not the school’s Voice Alert System could be expanded to be utilized by the Town as well. Jenevra didn’t think so but indicated she would look into the situation.
- Citizens’ Comments. There were no additional comments this evening.
- There being no further business before the Committee, the meeting was adjourned, by unanimous vote, @ 8:58 P.M.

School Choice
The Richmond Consolidated School currently has openings in several classes. We encourage families in surrounding towns to consider our school, and invite interested students and parents to visit us to see what we have to offer. For more information, please contact Dr. Karin Deyo, principal, at (413) 698-2207 or kdeyo@richmondconsolidated.org.
