Information for Incoming Third Graders

Dear Brand-New Third Grader

I’m so excited to have you in my class next year! We have so much to learn and experience together. We will read a lot of great books; publish all different types of writing; learn cursive; study the Wampanoags and Pilgrims, experiment with plants and rocks; and become experts in multiplication and division. But that’s just a small sampling of what we do in third grade. There’s so much more.

I’m counting on you to do a few things over the summer to be ready when school starts:

  1. Find and read at least three new chapter books that you absolutely love and would like to recommend to your classmates. We’re going to be sharing these books with each other at the beginning of the school year. The attached letter tells more about this assignment.
  2. Collect items for a shadow box (there are more details about this in the letter to your parents).
  3. Hunt for 4-5 interesting rocks.
  4. Memorize your addition and subtraction facts so that you know them automatically.

I also hope you have a chance to swim, see fireworks, catch fireflies, pick strawberries, play with friends, and sleep late. In other words — have fun! Recharge your battery and come back to school in August ready to learn.

I’ll be thinking of you as I plan for next year. Have a great summer.

Your new teacher,

Mrs. Smith
