Have you fed your hippo today?
“Feeding Your Hippo” is a concept that will help the children review and retain key concepts presented each week and throughout the year. It is based on the ideas that the hippocampus of the brain is a key instrument in helping retain memories. If exercised correctly, quality information can be stored and retrieved as necessary.
This exercise should be performed each night as close to bedtime as possible. This is an important time in your child’s brain activity. As they sleep, the brain will sift through events of the day and “file away” important memories, while others are discarded. Have you ever wondered why you can remember something when you were 5, but can’t remember what you had for dinner last night?
We also use repetition to aide in storing information. You will go over the same information every night. It follows the principle of 10-24-7. This way of learning helps transfer short-term memory to long-term memory by reviewing initial learning concepts within 10 minutes, 24 hours and again in 7 days.
